This week's readings suggest that cultivating attention, wonder, and gratitude for the gifts of the world are enduring characteristics of living well. The Gracious Attentiveness to Creation co-curricular event is a guided practice of cultivating this attention within the natural spaces accessible to you on campus.

Guidelines

The campus abounds with the beauty and biodiversity of nature, especially with trees, but are we attentive to it? How does one see a tree? How does attention to nature/creation affect one’s relationship with oneself, others, the world, and God?

You would use your eyes as never before. Everything you saw would become dear to you. Your eyes would touch and embrace every object that came within your range of vision. Then, at last, you would really see, and a new world of beauty would open itself before you.

Helen Keller, Three Days to See (1933)

This event is offered once each weekday from Thursday, September 5 - Wednesday, September 11. After an initial orientation to plant biology and the distinction between nature and creation from Fr. Terry Ehrman, C.S.C., you will live 30 minutes in silence, disconnected from electronic devices, observing a selected tree and its surroundings around the lake.

Register and attend an event that works best with your schedule. Registration is limited to 20 students per event.

You will use your commonplace book during this event to answer a provided reflection question and to make a sketch.
